Gas pain!  We're all feeling it.  Bus passes are up in sales.  Everything is costing more and the question is when will be the breaking point.  Callers shared their costs at the pump and we talked about the CHP who are breaking the bank in California with the amount of gas they are using.  What are you doing to save gas and money?  Front page stuff on both papers today!  One guy fills his tires with more air and turns his ignition off at stop lights.  Usage is down...and so are gas tax revenues.

People are stealing gas too!

Solar water heaters are becoming mandatory.  Local companies are worried about mainland companies coming in and taking their business.  People don't like the fact that they HAVE to put something on their house, but these things pay for themselves and are worth the energy savings.  Energy demand is expected to jump 50% by 2023.  That's alot and it will be driven by developing countries.  The question is can we move away from fossil fuels?  Coal and oil look to be in ever increasing demand over the next two decades and that could have a serious effect on the environment.

With Aloha closing, Go! carried 88,000 passengers last month.  That's 30,000 more than last year.  They will also be charging $25 for the second bag.

It's Ask the Mayor Day!  Mayor Mufi was in the house to talk with callers about the state of the City, including the rail project, individual street problems and alternative fuel in regards to City transportation.

Makana called the program to tell us about the Night At Rumfire Concert fundraiser, tomorrow at the Sheraton Waikiki.  There will be live music, a dj and a great raffle too!  The show goes from 5 until whenever!  All for charity of course.

By the way...Happy Leon Day!  Only 6 more months until Christmas!  Hope you enjoyed some of the fun X-mas songs we played today!

Topics covered today included tap water vs. bottled, carpooling and concealed weaponry.  A very busy day with callers opinions on all sides of the issues.  Meals on Wheels is also losing money and volunteers because of gas prices.  Donations and volunteers are needed!

Rick Terwilliger called the program with the Navy League update.

Brennon Morioka of the DOT also called the program to discuss the HOV/Zipper lane changes.  The HOV lane still needs two other people in the car but the Zipper now needs three in an attempt to move more people, in fewer cars, much faster.  Studies have shown that this is what will happen.  The announcement was made today and enforcement will be stepped up with a fine of $250 if you are caught using the late illegally.

In studio today we were joined by the Lt. Governor, Duke Aiona to talk about the state of the state.  The LG discussed with callers the changes regarding the zipper lane, alternative transportation, fiscal management, C&C vs. State responsibilities and more.

In some sad news that most people heard about today, Comedian George Carlin died last night at the age of 71.  One of the most colorful people to grace the planet, Carlin had a rapier wit and a view of the world that always made us think.  He was a comic genius and will be missed.

Young Brothers wants more money that would effect cargo shipping costs.  Fuel is the reason.  Company wants to improve equipment to the tune of  $millions.  Costs more money to do everything these days.  HMSA just raised their rates too, though not as much as they wanted to.

Today is the 50th anniversary of the Hula Hoop that got its start in Egypt of all places.  Millions have been sold and of course we here in Hawaii are experts at it! Wham-O promoted it for months in the late 50's and eventually it became the biggest fad ever.  It died out in the 60's but then they brought it back with the ball in side the hoop to make the noise.  Over 100 million were sold in the first year.

Garfield also has a birthday.   Jim Davis brought him to the world and if you haven't seen a suction cup Garfield in somebody's back window...well you must not drive a car.  Newspapers, books, stuffed animals, cartoons, cg movies, Garfield, his dog pal Odie and owner Jon are everywhere.

Ryan Abe of E Parts Hawaii/Discount Electronics joined us in studio for DOT BIZ today.  It's a new company that specialized in business to business and public sales.  They purchase overstock and remanufactured items, repair and certify them and then resell them to business/public at discount prices.  They repair all sorts of electronic items and can even special order parts to get a job done.  Find them online at www.epartshawaii.com or call 477-7533 opt. 3.   Their store is on Waialae Ave. in Kaimuki and is the first store of its kind in Kaimuki!

A lawsuit from a former pilot/mechanic after he was fired from Island Hopper planes has been filed after he spoke out against unsafe fuel and mechanical practices at the company.    A plane and passegers are still missing from the other day.  Scary.

Landfills vs. recycling vs. shipping our garbage out of here (at a cost of $10 million0 was a big topic today.  Callers had lots of opinions on how to do away with plastic in the landfills, burning garbage as fuel, etc.  The city's program, including the once a week pickup in Hawaii Kai and Mililani were discussed.

Friends of the Library 61st annual book sale is coming up at McKinley High School.  Books don't have a lot of monetary value but fewer and fewer people are reading these days.  The real loss is for everyone who doesn't like to read!  Some great memories can me made curling up with a good book.
